Dr. Robert Kalimi

Cardio-Thoracic Surgeon

The doctor pictured and identified on this page is a man to whom I owe a great deal of gratitude, and so I put this page up to serve as recognition of his extraordinary skills and also as a tribute to this fine and exemplary human being. The above image was taken from a website listing of doctors who specialize in cardio-thoracic surgery. The doctor DID NOT ask me to put this page up. In fact, I don't believe that he even knows that it's up, but I felt strongly about paying tribute to him after he had used all of his expert skills when I needed a C.A.B.G. (Coronary Artery Bypass Graft!) Four of them! Let me tell you about it!

In mid-December of 2010, upon the undertaking of a fairly mild physical exertion, I experienced a "discomforting burning sensation" in my upper chest and back. I had known, from hearing about such things, that a dull or sharp "pain" in the chest or back could be an indicator of a serious heart ailment which needed immediate attention, but mine was neither dull nor sharp, rather just a very "uncomfortable" feeling which, not surprisingly diminished and disappeared after several minutes of resting. However, I knew that this was an issue which I could not simply ignore.

So, I went to see my Primary Care Physician (PCP) who referred me to a cardiologist in the Bay Shore NY area. It took several days to get an appointment to see the cardiologist. My appointment was scheduled for Wednesday December 28 2010.

I was given an echo-cardiogram in the cardiologist's office. The results of that exam prompted the cardiologist to schedule me for an angioplasty in Southside Hospital on the very next day.

The angioplasty was performed on Thursday December 29 2010 and the cardiologist who performed it told me right then and there, "I can't help you here. You have coronary artery blockages which need more than a "stent" can accomplish." He was, in essence, telling me that I was too far advanced with "plaque" lining the walls of my coronary arteries. What he was referring to was a procedure whereby small stainless steel coils (stents) are placed within the artery to widen the remaining space for blood flow. The lining of plaque had narrowed the artery so that normal blood flow was very significantly restricted and this restriction was what contributed to the "discomfort" I was feeling in my upper chest and back when I took on a minor physical exertion. My heart, which demanded more blood for the activities I was performing, was being denied what it required because of the restricted flow in my coronary arteries, which in turn, was caused by the accumulated plaque. This was the end-result of many, many years of indiscriminate and extremely bad choices of fat-containing and cholesterol-loaded foods which I foolishly consumed without regard to the inherent dangers of such behavior.

After I came out of the angioplasty the doctor who performed it told me that I needed to get to the hospital immediately for a procedure called a Coronary Artery Bypass Graft which, in my particular case involved ALL four arteries!

There are four (4) coronary arteries which feed the human heart muscle. In my particular case all four arteries were clogged, each to varying degrees. The results of the angioplasty showed that two of the four were 90% occluded and the other two were obscured 50% and 40% respectively.

At Southside Hospital my cardiologist, following the angioplasty procedure, ordered the staff to call for an ambulance from North Shore of Manhasset Hospital to transport me there. I didn't know at the time that my cardiologist had already arranged for Dr. Robert Kalimi to perform the bypass surgery. The next day, Friday December 30 2010 at about 11:00 A.M. I was wheeled into the O.R. Dr. Kalimi had visited me earlier that morning to both introduce himself and to help calm my anxieties. I underwent anesthesia and I was "out" until the next morning. I spent five (5) days in the hospital including the day I was admitted, which was the day before the surgery. Three weeks following my discharge from the hospital I went to see Dr. Kalimi in his office for a follow-up examination. I had a chance to speak with him besides thanking him profusely for the new lease on life which he had given to me. I found him to be "genuinely human" in manner, and definitely NOT, as I'm sure you yourself, a friend or a relative may have found a majority of doctors to be, "aloof cold or professional," but instead I found Dr. Kalimi to be every bit a warm and personable human being with a gentle and soft manner about him.

I consider myself to have been the luckiest person in the world to have had Dr. Kalimi be the surgeon to perform the C.A.B.G. upon me.

In summary I just want to say that on December 30, 2010 Dr. Kalimi used all of his skills and today I am feeling in the best of health! I now watch, very carefully, what I consume with respect to food and I take my medications which Dr. Kalimi prescribed and I want whomever is reading this to know that if you should ever need cardiac surgery Dr. Robert Kalimi should be YOUR choice of surgeon! I did not get to make a choice, this having been my first time with cardio difficulties, BUT, if I ever were asked to recommend a skillful and competent cardio-thoracic surgeon, without any hesitation whatsoever  Dr. Robert Kalimi would be my recommendation! I consider myself very lucky to have had this fine doctor be the one who performed my surgery!

I put this page up because I wanted to share my story with those who either now, or may sometime in the future, face the prospect of Coronary Artery Bypass Graft surgery. UPDATE ON Wednesday 12/30/2015: It has now been 5 years since my life-saving surgery at the hands of this marvelous and dedicated doctor. Without Dr. Robert Kalimi's intervention in my life, at a very crucial and critical time, I know that I would not have been able to survive to write this! God bless you Doctor Kalimi, you are truly a performer of miracles and with heartfelt thanks I wish you all the best of the New Year and for all of the years yet to come!

UPDATE ON Friday 12/30/2016: Today marks 6 years since my quadruple bypass surgery took place under the expert and skillful hands of Dr. Robert Kalimi. I still pay tribute to this fine doctor without whose help I know that I would not have been able to survive to write this today! Doctor Kalimi, there are truly no words to say that would pay enough tribute to you for the extension of life which you have bestowed upon me. I can only humbly express my sincerest thanks and appreciation to you! I know that there are many, many others who have received beneficial treatment from you and that if, by chance, there should be someone who is currently experiencing cardio-related difficulties and is reading this I want them to know that Doctor Robert Kalimi is the absolute best cardio-thoracic surgeon to seek help from. UPDATE FOR Saturday 12/30/2017: Again I sing your praises Dr. Robert Kalimi. It has now been 7 years since you gave me the gift of extended life. Without your skillful and expert abilities I know for a fact, that I would NOT have been able to be here writing these words of well-deserved tribute. My reason for celebrating each anniversary of my surgery is to both acknowledge and thank you for what you had done in my darkest hours after my being informed that I was in a critical situation and condition with little hope of living out what is considered as normal lifespan because of my occluded and almost fully blocked coronary arteries. Well, Doctor Kalimi, I have learned and learned well a lesson in life and that lesson is to proceed with caution when making choices in food. I have learned to eat what is good for me and not what I may otherwise want but should never consume! My blood pressure is controlled both by medication and by intelligent selections of edibles and also by sensible portion control. Incidentally, as you certainly know, blood pressure varies with mood and activity however my blood pressure reads, at rest, 110/60, as typically measured by my Primary Care Physician.

I am getting a bit long-winded so I will close here by saying, Doctor Robert Kalimi, you have done me a service that I will never be able to repay in kind, but my token of appreciation for what you have done for me is to proclaim to countless others what miracles you are capable of. You and your expert "magic hands" have literally prolonged my life and for that I will be forever grateful. Once again I humbly thank you, and as the years pass I will continue to pay tribute to you, for you have made it possible for me to be able to do just that!

Thank you again and again!

I wish for you nothing but the very, very best!

But in this small way, by spreading information to the world-at-large, I hope to make your name known globally as the skilled surgeon who, with his expert knowledge, skills and "magic hands" allowed me to be here for yet another year, so I could write these words.
